Freemasonry is not a religion, and it does not require a candidate to belong to a particular denomination. Men of many faiths may be eligible, provided they meet the lodge’s membership requirements and believe in a Supreme Being.
Do I Need to Know a Mason?
No. Many men begin their Masonic journey without personally knowing a Mason.
A good first step is to contact a local lodge through its website, email address, or phone number. The lodge may invite you to an informal dinner, public event, open house, or conversation with members. This gives you an opportunity to ask questions, learn about the lodge’s activities, and decide whether membership is right for you.
As you get to know the members, you may meet Masons who can explain the petition process and, if appropriate, recommend you for membership. New Jersey lodges commonly require references and recommenders as part of the application process.
What Happens After I Ask?
Freemasonry does not recruit members. A man must make the first request himself. Once you have met members and had your questions answered, you can ask for a petition for membership.
